New in New Jersey: the Stephen Komninos LawIt doubles annual unannounced inspections, requires employees to undergo drug tests and mandate group home operators more quickly disclose information to families after a loved one is hurt.

“Stephen Komninos Law” took effect in New Jersey this week, named for a 22-year-old man with intellectual disabilities who choked to death in 2007 when his caregiver at a residential facility left him unattended, against doctor’s orders.

The law success resulted from years of tireless advocacy by Komninos’ father, Thomas, and others with family members who have suffered under state-run care.
